Founded
in 1927 in Lahore by Mahatma Hans Raj Ji, a dedicated reformer and staunch
advocate of the DAV Movement, Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya stands tall as a
beacon of women’s education and empowerment in North India. After Partition in
1948, the institution was relocated to Jalandhar, where it continued its noble
mission of educating and empowering women. A landmark in its journey was the
inauguration of its core block in 1959 by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, then
Vice President of India, a testimony to its growing stature in the field of
education.
Today,
under the visionary leadership of Padma Shri Awardee Dr. Punam Suri, President,
DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, HMV has evolved into a premier
institution dedicated to value-based, employment-oriented education. The
college proudly holds an ‘A++’ grade with a score of 3.65 in the third
cycle of NAAC Reaccreditation, a distinction that reflects its commitment
to academic excellence. Recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as
a "College of Excellence," HMV serves over 5,000 students, providing
them with a holistic learning experience beyond conventional academics.
Equipped
with state-of-the-art infrastructure and a team of committed educators, HMV
fosters intellectual growth, creativity, and innovation. Its legacy of
excellence is not confined to academics alone, the institution has also made
its mark in sports and extracurricular pursuits. HMV played a key role in Guru
Nanak Dev University’s 25th MAKA Trophy win, while its alumni,
like Arjuna Awardee Prachi Yadav and ace athlete Harmilan Bains, have
brought laurels to the nation in prestigious international arenas such as the
Asian Games and Asian Indoor Athletics Championship.
Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya has consistently affirmed its position as a frontrunner in academic innovation, sustainability, and skill development. The institution was honoured with the Overall Sustainability Excellence Award 2025–26 by the National EduTrust of India, emerging as a national leader by winning in every category it entered. HMV also secured the First Rank in Arts, Science, and Commerce among all colleges in Punjab, alongside a Third Rank in Fashion Design and Mass Communication, highlighting its multidisciplinary strength. In the India Today Rankings 2025, the college earned recognition among the top institutions for BCA in Punjab. Its unwavering commitment to holistic education was further acknowledged by The Tribune, which ranked HMV among the Best Colleges in North India in Arts, Science, and Commerce. Adding to its prestigious accolades, the college was conferred the Best Institute in Skill Development and Education Award by Education World under the Grand Jury Higher Education Rankings 2025–26, reinforcing its status as a national leader in empowering students with industry-relevant skills.
