R. Venkataraman Chemical Society of Hans Raj Mahila Mahavidyalaya,
Jalandhar, organized an industrial visit for the students of M.Sc. Chemistry
and B.Sc. Final year to Khanna Paper Mill, Amritsar, under the guidance of
Principal Prof. Dr. Mrs. Ajay Sareen and supervision of Dr. Neelam Sharma (Head
of Chemistry Department) and Mrs. Deepshikha. A total of 60 students visited
the mill and gathered valuable information about the making of paper. Mr.
Suneet Kochar, Director, and Mr. Arun Sharma, Unit Head of the mill, took
charge of the trip. Students visited various sections of the mill. They were
first taken to the de- inking plant where the raw material is sorted according to
the quality of paper to be prepared, and separated from the non recyclable
waste material. Then the sorted material is transferred to pulper for pulp
extraction and the pulp is transferred to other machines for further
processing. Most of the machines there were automated. The mill is known to
prepare all kinds of paper ranging from high quality to quality required for
newspapers. The students were encouraged to use paper in an environment
friendly manner, that it is reusable and recyclable. Protection of environment
is priority, was the message which the students took home with. The trip was
exciting and informative and students appreciated it a lot. It was very much
beneficial for M.Sc. Chemistry Students as it explained the various processes
taking place at large scale in industry. The students were highly benefitted by
the visit as they correlated theory with practical. This academic industry
interaction benefitted the students and broadened their horizons for future
plans.
