Under the able guidance of Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen, The
Freudian Psychological Society of Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar,
organised a one day workshop on “School Counsellor: Their role In School. The Resource
Person, Mrs. Manmeet Sawhney, Senior Counsellor, MGN Public School, was
welcomed by Head of PG Department of Psychology, Dr. Ashmeen Kaur with a
planter and painting by the students of HMV as a token of appreciation. As the
workshop proceeded, Mrs. Sawhney discussed the significance of a School Counsellor.
Mrs. Sawhney emphasised on how “The School Counsellor is the Heart of the
institution”. She further elaborated on how the school counsellor plays a part
in every sphere of a student’s life – from academics, to socio-emotional
growth, tackling developmental issues, shaping the student’s career and
instilling self-esteem and confidence, while providing support to the parents.
The Do’s and Don’ts that every counsellor must adhere to like, confidentiality,
being non-judgmental and why it is important, along with an array of case
studies were also discussed. Mrs. Sawhney shed light on the prime issues
students of senior classes face like career issues at group and at individual
level, to relationship counselling. During the conclusion, Mrs Sawhney also
talked about the career aspects in the field of counselling and
enthusiastically attended to every query put forth by the children. The
workshop was attended by around 100 students’ from varied streams, which actively
interacted and asked questions throughout the event. Principal Dr. Ajay Sareen
also laid emphasis on the pivotal part a School Councellor plays and also
talked about the initiatives of the PG Department of Psychology taken towards
this movement by introducing courses of B.Voc Mental Health & Counselling
and M.Voc Mental Health & Counselling during the current COVID scenario when mental health crisis and
services catering to it is at its peak. On this occasion, faculty members, Ms.
Harmanjeet, Ms. Pragya, Ms Shruti and Ms. Niharika were also present. The stage
was conducted by Harshita Paul and Mehkash and Vote of thanks was given by Ms. Niharika.
