HMV Hosts First-of-its-Kind Workshop on Environmental Journalism for Aspiring Women


 

Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya Jalandhar hosted first-of-its-kind a two-day workshop on environmental journalism for aspiring women media professionals in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST) & CMS Vatavaran, New Delhi under the able guidance of Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen. The resource person of the event was Mr. Manish Chandra Mishra Assistant Editor at Mongabay-India. The honorary guests of the event were Mr. Sabyesachi Bharti Deputy Director CMS Vatavaran, Mr. Kencho Dorji Associate CMS. They were welcomed with green planters by Dr. Navroop Dean Youth Welfare, Dr. Seema Marwaha Dean Academics, Dr. Anjana Bhatia Advisor of the event, Dr. Rama Sharma & Mr. Ashish Chadha Conveners of the event. The co-conveners of the event were Ms. Sonali Beri & Ms. Jyoti Sehgal. The title of the workshop was ‘Empowering Women in Media: Future Journalists for a Greener Punjab’. Organized under the Environment Education Programme (EEP) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, this unique initiative aimed to build the journalistic capacities of young women pursuing media studies. Around 78 female journalism students from several leading colleges and universities in Jalandhar participated in the programme. The workshop was designed to provide practical training in environmental reporting, focusing on key areas such as fact-checking, storytelling, multimedia journalism, data analysis, safety, social media engagement, and emerging trends like AI and data visualization. The inaugural session was conducted by Mr. Manish Chandra Mishra, Assistant Editor at Mongabay-India, a DW Akademie Fellow, and a graduate of the Oxford News Marketing Program. He brought extensive experience in covering environmental issues and led the participants through an immersive and skill-driven training. This workshop equipped aspiring women journalists with essential skills in environmental reporting, including fact-checking, storytelling, multimedia tools, and data journalism. Participants also learned about digital safety, ethical reporting, and emerging trends like AI in media. The training aimed to empower them to confidently report on environmental issues and become strong voices for sustainability and change in their communities. This initiative was part of CMS Vatavaran’s  broader mission to empower co-creation of innovative solutions for planetary well-being by leveraging communication technologies, strengthening capacities, curating collaborative spaces, and enabling transformative engagements.
