The PG Department of Psychology of Hans Raj Mahila Maha
Vidyalaya organized an educational visit to the Government Rehabilitation
Institute for Intellectual Disabilities (GRIID), Chandigarh under the able
guidance of Principal Dr. Ekta Khosla.
The visit was aimed at providing students with practical exposure to rehabilitation
services and inclusive practices for individuals with intellectual
disabilities. Dr. Ashmeen Kaur, Head of the Department of Psychology, along
with Ms. Nandita Sharma, accompanied the students of B.Voc./M.Voc. Mental
Health Counseling and Psychology (Hons.). During the visit, students observed a
range of therapeutic and training programmes, gaining valuable insights into
assessment techniques, intervention strategies, and support systems. They were
introduced to various vocational training activities, including bag making,
tailoring, computer basics, craft work, carpentry, and musical instruments,
emphasizing the significance of skill development and vocational independence.
The students also interacted with special educators, which enhanced their understanding
of individualized teaching methods and the practical challenges faced in the
field of rehabilitation. The visit reinforced the importance of adopting a
strength-based approach, focusing on the abilities and potential of individuals
rather than their limitations. The experience proved to be highly enriching,
fostering empathy, professional competence, and awareness regarding inclusive
practices. The visit also included a brief recreational halt at Sukhna Lake.
The visit served as a meaningful step in bridging the gap between theoretical
knowledge and its practical application.
