The DBT-sponsored Summer School in Sciences,
held from 5th to 12th June 2025, culminated in a Valedictory Function at
Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar, under the visionary leadership of Principal
Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen. The summer school was a transformative platform
for young learners, providing them with hands-on training, interdisciplinary
exposure, and a taste of real-world scientific applications — all while braving
the prevailing heatwave with unwavering enthusiasm. Presiding over the
valedictory, Principal Dr. Ajay Sareen congratulated the participants and
expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Department of Biotechnology (DBT),
Government of India, for initiating such visionary programs under the STAR
SCHEME, which are proving instrumental in fostering scientific curiosity,
particularly among young women. She highlighted the pressing need for skill
development and encouraged students to take science beyond the classroom to
address challenges like climate change, pollution, and waste management. Dr.
Anjana Bhatia, Head of the PG Department of Botany and Coordinator of the
programme, acknowledged the continuous support of the DBT STAR SCHEME and
extended special gratitude to Dr. Garima Gupta, whose encouragement and
guidance have been pivotal in the successful implementation of this initiative.
Dr. Bhatia motivated the students to think creatively and use scientific
inquiry to solve real-world environmental problems. As part of the DBT STAR
SCHEME Summer School, students were immersed in a rich interdisciplinary
scientific experience that provided hands-on exposure to multiple branches of
science. In Botany, they explored the campus Botanical Garden, performed soil
analysis, and created synthetic seeds, gaining valuable insights into plant
physiology and sustainable agriculture. Zoology sessions introduced them to the
fascinating microscopic world through slide preparation and anatomical
observations, nurturing their understanding of animal biology. The Chemistry
component enabled students to carry out titration experiments, pH testing, and
synthesize eco-friendly products, thereby honing their precision and laboratory
skills. In Physics, they engaged in practical experiments on motion, light, and
energy transformations, allowing them to connect theoretical concepts with
real-world applications. The Biotechnology module offered hands-on training in
microbial culturing and DNA extraction, fostering appreciation for modern
techniques in genetic engineering and molecular biology. In Mathematics,
students engaged in problem-solving and logic-based activities that linked
numerical reasoning with data interpretation, enhancing their analytical
skills. The Computer Science sessions introduced the basics of programming,
data visualization, and the use of software tools to support scientific
research. Furthermore, students were introduced to Bioinformatics, where they
learned how to analyze and interpret biological data using computational techniques,
thus bridging biology and information technology in the context of genomics and
molecular studies. This holistic exposure to the scientific spectrum not only
deepened their conceptual understanding but also instilled a research-oriented
mindset and a spirit of innovation among the participants. The students were
given a Science Project Challenge on the final day of the camp. Their projects
were judged by Dr. Vandana and Dr. Sakshi, who evaluated them based on
innovation, scientific approach, and presentation. The coveted Young Scientist
Awards were bagged by Himaawai, Inayat, Tanya, and Ankita for their outstanding
projects. Sandeep Kaur was honoured with Special Appreciation for her
consistent efforts and active participation throughout the summer school.Mrs.
Deepshikha, Faculty Head of Sciences and overall in-charge of the programme,
led the initiative with tireless enthusiasm and effective coordination. Dr.
Saloni Sharma, Convener of the Summer School, welcomed Principal Dr. Ajay
Sareen during the inaugural session with a green planter and also greeted the
registered students with warmth and encouragement. Dr. Seema Marwaha, Course
Coordinator and Dean Academics, proposed a formal vote of thanks at the
conclusion of the programme, acknowledging the contribution of the faculty,
judges, and support staff in making the event a grand success. The summer school
was also graced by the presence of esteemed faculty members, including Dr.
Jitender, Dr. Harpreet Singh, Mr. Sumit, Dr. Vandana, Dr. Suchi, Dr. Simmi, Dr.
Sakshi, Mr. Sushil, Dr. Gagandeep, Dr. Gaurav, Dr. Dipali, and Mr. Ravi. This
enriching initiative once again reinforced HMV’s commitment to academic
excellence and women empowerment in science, establishing it as a premier
institution under the DBT STAR SCHEME and a role model in transformative
education.
