National Webinar on Organic Farming


 

Under the able guidance of Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen, PG Department of Botany, Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar organized National Webinar on “Organic Farming” under initiative of Industry Academia Interface. Shri Umendra Dutt, Director Kheti Virasat Mission, Resource person of the webinar was formally welcomed by Dr. Anjana Bhatia, Head, Department of Botany.  Shri Umendra Dutt beautifully crafted the need for a shift to chemical free farming. He also presented the crux of debate on Nature V/s Science while specially referring to the modern Punjab. He discussed in detail about the need of organic farming in today’s time and explained that organic farming is ecological production management system that promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. It is based on minimal use of off-farm inputs and on management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony. He further said that to save water and health of Punjab it is need of the hour to shift from conventional chemical farming to organic farming. Students have also interacted with some progressive organic farmers and learnt that the use of chemicals and genetically modified organisms is totally prohibited in organic farming. On this occasion Mrs. Vandana Bali, local organic farming activist also interacted with students and motivate them to set up kitchen garden at roof-top. Dr. Anjana Bhatia said that we need to put into practice our traditional wisdom. Principal Dr. Ajay Sareen motivated the students to be the part of change they wish to see in the world. Mrs. Meenakshi Syal Co-ordinator Community College apprised the students about vertical mobility.  She told that students can join B. Voc. 2nd Year (Agriculture) after completion of Diploma in Organic Farming. Dr. Nitika Kapoor, Incharge, Diploma in Organic Farming also encouraged students to learn the basic concept of organic farming by enrolling in ‘Diploma in organic farming’ under UGC community college scheme, for which 10+2 (in any stream) is eligibility and there is no age bar for this course.  Dr. Shaveta Chauhan,   Mrs. Ramandeep Ms. Harpreet Kaur and Dr. Shuchi Sharma were also present. At end of the webinar Dr. Nitika Kapoor presented vote of thanks.
