Chandrayaan
Vipnet club of PG Department of Physics, in collaboration with IAPT RC-02
organized one day national seminar on “High Energy Physics and Career
Prospective” under DBT STAR
Scheme. Dr. Manjit Kaur Prof. (Emiretus) Amity University, Mohali was the
resource person. Principal Prof. Dr. (Mrs.) Ajay Sareen and the faculty of
Physics department welcomed the resource person with a planter. Dr. Saloni
Sharma, Head PG department of Physics acquainted the students about the theme
of seminar and also introduced the resource person. Dr. Manjit Kaur is among
top 2% scientists worldwide and has been in-charge of Indian contingent working
on LHC experiment responsible for the discovery of God particle. Starting with
the Big Bang theory and composition of the universe, she illustrated the
fundamental constituents of matter at atomic, nuclear and particle level. She
also elaborated the role of high energy physics for understanding the
composition of elementary particles like protons and neutrons etc. using Quarks
and Leptons. She described that four fundamental forces occurring in nature are
gravitational forces, electromagnetic forces, weak forces and strong forces.
She also explained about the force barriers of these forces i.e., gluons,
photons, Z-bosons and W-bosons. She explained the journey from launch of large
electron proton collider experiment (LEP) in 1980 towards launch of Large
Hadron collider (LHC) in 2012. She briefed the students about the constitution
of LHC which is spread over a circumference of 27 km in Geneva, Switzerland and
elaborated its role in unfolding the mystery of creation of the universe,
matter and anti-matter. She updated the students about the various mega science
projects launched by the govt. like LASER interferometer Gravitational
Observatory (LIGO), Internal Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER),
Relativistic heavy ion Collider (RHIC) etc. and also apprised them about the
course of action to be a part of these projects. The lecture was very
enlightening and was followed by interaction with the students to quench their
curiosity. More than 60 students were benefitted by the talk. Principal Dr.
Sareen congratulated the faculty for the successful event and motivated them to
arrange more such talks to keep the students updated with the latest
developments in their field. Mr. Sushil Kumar, Incharge Chandrayaan Vipnet
Club, presented the vote of thanks. Dr. Simmi Garg was also present on the
occasion.
